Can you believe August is already here? It feels like summer has flown by!
Some of us may be clinging onto the last sun-soaked days of the year, while others are more than ready to break out our cozy fall gear. Either way, there’s one thing we’ll all have to do: transition our wardrobe from summer to fall.
These in-between periods are always challenging, since we’re essentially bouncing from season to season over the course of a single day. We’ll start to feel that crisp fall air in the morning, only to feel the summer heat by the afternoon, followed by another temperature dip in the evening. Knowing what to wear isn’t easy!
Luckily we’ve got your back. Below we’ll be sharing some of our favorite summer to fall transition outfits that will keep you comfortable and cute, no matter where the day takes you.
How To Transition From Summer To Fall
● Start with a summery foundation, end with elements of fall
Besides prolonging the life of your summer wardrobe, this method is a surefire way to keep you cool during those midday heat waves. And it offers the perfect balance of both seasons!
Not sure what we mean? Basically, start off with a typical summer outfit, like a sundress or a blouse and shorts. Then add fall-approved layers, like a long cardigan, a suede jacket, or a blazer. Anything that will keep you warm during cooler moments but is easy to ditch once the temperatures rise. You can also start experimenting with fall accessories like ankle booties (instead of sandals) and lightweight scarves, and be sure to swap out raffia bags and hats for thicker fall materials.
● Introduce earthier hues
Nothing says fall like a rich, earthy color palette. Now is the time to start breaking out your most beautiful rusts, olives, mustards, burgundies, camels, and teals. You know, any color that can rival the fall leaves!
The best thing about this styling tip is that it can apply to any garment. So even if you’re in the middle of an Indian summer, you can still give off fall vibes while wearing a tank top and a skirt. Not into typical fall colors? Any kind of dark hue is fine, even if it’s a classic black or dark gray.
● Stick to lightweight layers, but experiment with different lengths
Hold off on the chunky sweaters for now — we both know you’ll have plenty of chances to wear them come winter! The summer to fall transitional period is the perfect time of year for wearing your lighter layers. Trench coats, thin-knit cardigans, leather jackets, and blazers are all great options.
As for basics? You can start pulling out your long sleeves and sweatshirts to replace your tanks and tees. Alternatively, why not try out a short-sleeved or sleeveless knit top? This is one of the few times of the year you can mix hemline lengths without looking or feeling weird (ie. long sleeves with shorts, tank tops with full-length pants), so take advantage of it!
● Mix your materials
Linen and leather? Silk and wool? The sky’s the limit during the in-between phase. Hold onto your favorite summer fabrics while incorporating thicker fall materials into your looks. For example, you can pair the linen pants you’ve been living in all summer with a knit t-shirt, style a linen dress with a leather or suede jacket, or throw a cardigan over a silky skirt or dress. Just be sure to accessorize accordingly with more fall-appropriate footwear, like loafers or ankle boots.
● Just add jeans
This might be our easiest tip yet. Jeans go well with pretty much everything, including summery tops and blouses. Swap out your shorts and skirts for your favorite pair of jeans (and maybe a blazer or cardigan), and you’ll be golden! These kinds of outfits look especially cute with loafers or ballet flats — sandals might still feel too summery, while boots will probably look too heavy. Dark wash denim will also help to create a more autumnal feel.
